Rosenqvist wins in Marrakesh and grabs championship lead

Felix Rosenqvist has won the Marrakesh ePrix by beating Renault e.dam’s Sébastien Buemi with four laps to go. By winning his second race in a row, the Mahindra driver took the championship lead. Sam Bird finished in third.

Buemi defended his pole position at the start and was able to create a gap along with Sam Bird. Felix Rosenqvist maintained in third while Lucas di Grassi was able to overtake José María López for fourth. Nelson Piquet attacked on the spot and passed the Dragon driver who dropped to eight. Alex Lynn lost his place in the top ten when he tried to pass Daniel Abt and collided. The Virgin Racing driver could continue in 19th position only have Jerome D’Ambrosio behind him.

Soon Di Grassi came under pressure from Piquet. The reigning champion defended, but shortly after that the Brazilian was ordered by the team to stop the car. He made it to the pits after a reset. Meanwhile Bird chased Buemi for the lead and Abt was able to overtake Piquet for fourth. The German driver couldn’t enjoy his position for long as he received a drive through penalty for the incident with Lynn.

Bird also seemed a victim. He lost time prior to the car swap and therefore Rosenqvist took the opportunity to pass the British driver. A full course yellow was shortly announced due to the stranded vehicle of André Lotterer. It was the ideal moment for the drivers to complete the pit stop. However a few, including Jaguar’s Mitch Evans and Abt just made their stop.

When the race continued Buemi’s lead was a bit less than two seconds to Rosenqvist. Bird remained in third, in front of Piquet. Jean-Eric Vergne moved up to fifth, but was ten seconds behind the leader.

Rosenqvist was able to close the gap and attacked with four laps to go. It was successful and the Mahindra driver passed his rival. Buemi was not able to follow and settled in second.
